Pain can originate from many different causes. It is very important to understand, that pain is a warning signal from the body. A stimulus that may be harmful is detected. Only if the cause of the pain has been identified, the warning signal has lost its function.
If you don’t know the cause of the pain, consult your physician or therapist.
Electrical stimulation or electrotherapy is a commonly applied, safe, effective and easy-to-use method of pain treatment. It doesn’t cure the cause of the pain, but it may provide significant pain relief without side effects. It may prevent or reduce the use of medication.
Low frequent impulses generated by an electro stimulation device are delivered through electrodes on the skin. Depending on the type of electro stimulation nerves, muscles and/or body tissues are stimulated.
The most commonly used type of electrotherapy is TENS.
TENS (= Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a clinically proven, non-invasive, drug-free method of controlling pain by the transmission of electrical stimulation to the body’s nerve fibers through the skin. TENS is used both for acute pain (Gate Control Theory) and for chronic pain (Endorphin release)
